Taco Hemingway
Taco Hemingway
Polish rapper Taco Hemingway became a superstar in his country in the late 2010s. He was never known for political content until his controversial 2020 single “Polskie Tango.” • Hemingway’s music journey began in his late teens. He recorded his earliest songs in his mother’s basement around 17 years old. • In 2011, he issued his English-language debut mixtape, Who Killed JFK?, under the moniker Foodvillain. • As Taco Hemingway, he offered 2014’s gold-certified Trójkąt Warszawski, his first Polish-language project and, thus, his first widely successful release. • Hemingway’s 2016 debut album, Marmur, earned a platinum certification and a nomination for Hip-Hop/R&B Album of the Year at the Fryderyk Awards. • He and fellow Polish rapper Quebonafide formed the rap duo Taconafide. In 2018, they released their diamond-certified Soma 0,5 Mg. • In July 2020, Hemingway and rapper Lanek issued “Polskie Tango.” The political single condemned Poland’s right-wing government and was met with backlash from Polish conservatives. • Hemingway followed up shortly after with Jarmark and Europa. The albums hit No. 1 and No. 2 on the Polish Charts, respectively.

Paktofonika
Paktofonika
Paktofonika were a Polish hip-hop group founded in Katowice in 1998 by Magik (Piotr Łuszcz), Fokus (Wojtek Alszer), and Rahim (Sebastian Salbert). The group's sound featured elements of ragga, funk, and jazz, and featured introspective lyrics about personal struggles with an ultimately empowering, positive message. The group started in 1998 when Magik left influential hardcore rap group Kaliber 44, and Rahim left his group 3xKlan. Joining the trio of rappers were turntablist DJ Bambus and beatboxer Sot. Paktofonika signed to Gigant Records in spring of 2000, and released debut full-length Kinematografia toward the end of that year. The album was a success, hitting number two on the Polish charts and being certified gold. Tragically, Magik committed suicide eight days after the album was released. The group continued performing without him, using recordings of his vocals during concerts. The group's second and final album, Archiwum Kinematografii, was released in 2002, and consisted of outtakes from their debut, as well as new songs recorded without Magik. Paktofonika performed their final concert in March of 2003, and the concert was released on DVD as Pożegnalny Koncert in April of 2004. Rahim, Fokus, and DJ Bambus continued making music as Pokahontaz. Jesteś Bogiem, a film about Paktofonika's story, was released in 2012, and became the most successful Polish film of the year, winning several awards and spawning a gold-selling soundtrack. ~ Paul Simpson, Rovi

Myslovitz
Myslovitz
Popular, platinum-selling Polish outfit Myslovitz pepper their melodic pop/rock with flourishes of Brit-pop, shoegaze, and indie rock. Deriving their name from their southern Poland industrial hometown of Myslowice, they originally formed in 1992 under the moniker the Freshman. After changing their name in 1994, Myslovitz -- consisting of Michał Kowalonek, Wojciech Powaga, Jacek Kuderski, Wojciech Kuderski, and Przemek Myszor -- released their eponymous debut album in 1995. The band inked a deal with the Polish division of Sony Music the following year and issued sophomore outing Sun Machine, which earned favorable reviews and comparisons to bands like Oasis and the Verve. Subsequent LPs Z Rozmyślań Przy Sniadaniu (1997), Miłość w Czasach Popkultury (1999), and Korova Milky Bar (2002) helped establish Myslovitz as one of the biggest acts in Poland, with the latter album birthing a 2003 English version that helped to expand the band's international appeal. The psych-tinged Skalary, Mieczyki, Neonki and Happiness Is Easy arrived in 2004 and 2006, respectively, with Niewazne, Jak Wysoko Jestesmy... dropping in 2011 and 1,577 hitting the streets in 2013. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi
