Un pomeriggio si incontrano, come per caso, su un sentiero che costeggia il mare e, su un pezzetto di carta che lei non getterà, lui scrive un numero di telefono. Che Marie chiamerà, tornata a Parigi, dalla cabina telefonica di un caffè. In una breve Nota all'edizione Gallimard della Donna di Gilles, Madeleine Bourdouxhe aveva scritto: «L'annientamento nell'amore: un po' la storia di tutte le donne», ma qui la prospettiva è cambiata, e il suo sguardo segue con vibrante complicità il percorso di una donna che affronta, con un'audacia che quasi la stupisce, «l'intransigenza del desiderio». E che alla fine del libro, a chi le chiede il suo nome, risponde di chiamarsi Marie «Marie e basta». «Saltando dalle rocce sulla sabbia, il ragazzo tende la mano a Marie per aiutarla. Lei ha già preso lo slancio, convinta che lui si farà da parte per lasciarla saltare. Invece non si muove, la accoglie tra le braccia e la tiene stretta per qualche secondo. «Si siedono sulla sabbia. Potrebbero parlarsi ancora: delle colline lontane che digradano verso il mare, della forma di una villa bianca tra i cipressi. Ma a che serve? Sanno che non c'è niente da dire. Accettano tra loro quel silenzio, la ricchezza, la sincerità di quel grande silenzio. Sanno pure che in quel momento vedono ogni cosa dalla stessa prospettiva e che, per entrambi, quella vela rossa sul mare spicca netta, aspra, crudele come quella cosa che è in loro».
