Dreamcatcher
Artist
A South Korean girl group who fuse mysterious horror and fantasy themes with slick dance-pop, rock, and metal, Dreamcatcher rose quickly into the K-pop mainstream with a series of loosely thematic EPs in 2017 and 2018. A breakout act at home, the seven-member group also found a more widespread international audience which they fostered over the next two years with tours of Europe, Asia, and South America. Their largest audience outside of South Korea emerged in Japan where they released the 2019 full-length album, The Beginning of the End. They have continued to hit the Top Five in Korea with albums like 2020's Dystopia: The Tree of Language and 2022's Apocalypse: Save Us. Formed in 2014 by Happy Face Entertainment, the initial lineup of Jiu, Sua, Siyeon, Yoohyeon, and Dami released a handful of singles and the 2015 EP, Love Shake, under the name Minx. As Minx, the group's songs trended toward a bright, bubbly K-pop style with a decidedly cheerful youth-oriented aesthetic. They enjoyed moderate success during this early phase, but by the end of 2016, Happy Face announced that Minx had taken on two new members, Handong and Gahyeon, and would soon reemerge in a darker-toned version under the name Dreamcatcher. Distancing themselves from the wholesome image of their early days, the seven-member Dreamcatcher fused adult-oriented dance music with elements of rock and metal. Their edgy new sound and look was further enhanced by the use of horror and fantasy themes which they quickly established on singles like "Nightmare" and "Chase Me." Released in July 2017, Dreamcatcher's first EP, Prequel, quickly found an audience at home while also charting in Japan and on the U.S. Billboard World Albums chart. One of the year's breakout K-pop acts, the group entered 2018 with another horror-themed hit, "Full Moon," and a major tour of Europe to nurture their growing international fan base. Following the May release of their second EP, Escape the Era, Dreamcatcher traveled to South America for their Welcome to the Dream World in Latin America. They ended their banner year with a third EP, Alone in the City, which hit number two on the Korean chart, making it their highest placement yet. Appearing in February 2019, The End of Nightmare EP marked the final entry in the thematic arc that began with their debut single, "Nightmare." It's lead single, "Piri," mixed their trademark rock sounds with the double-reeded Korean instrument, the piri. A major tour of Asia and Oceania acted as a build-up to the September release of The Beginning of the End, Dreamcatcher's first Japanese full-length album. Around this time the group launched their highly anticipated official fan club, Insomnia, which was open to both South Korean and Japanese fans. Their Korean comeback EP, Raid of Dream, arrived a mere week after the Japanese album, led by the single "Deja Vu," a song written for the King's Raid mobile game. Dreamcatcher ended the year (and decade) on a high note with another large-scale tour of Europe. In January 2020, the group returned with their debut Korean full-length album, Dystopia: The Tree of Language. Buoyed by the singles "Paradise" and "Scream," the album reached number 3 on the Goan album chart. It was followed by two companion EPs, 2020's Dystopia: Lose Myself and 2021's Dystopia: Road to Utopia, the latter of which topped the Korean albums chart. Also in 2021, they released the special Korean EP Summer Holiday. Dreamcatcher's second Korean full-length, Apocalypse: Save Us, arrived in April 2022, hitting number four on the Goan chart. ~ Timothy Monger, Rovi

CLC
Artist
Korean girl group CLC bring attitude and edge to their beat-forward K-pop anthems, which lean more on fun dance energy than sweet balladry. The second all-girl outfit for CUBE Entertainment, the seven-piece CLC debuted in early 2015 with First Love, issuing a blitz of EPs into the end of the decade that kept them planted in the Korean Top 20 until their 2017 U.S. breakthrough, Crystyle, expanded their international audience. In 2019, they hit a chart peak in Korea and the U.S. with their eighth Korean-language effort, No. 1. CLC's incarnation consisted of leader OH SEUNGHEE, CHOI YUJIN, CHANG SEUNGYEON, SORN, JANG YEEUN and KWON EUNBIN. They issued their debut EP, First Love, in March 2015, quickly following with Question in May. Coinciding with the fresh additions, they issued their first offering as a septet, the aptly titled Refresh. Months later, they released their first Japanese-language effort, High Heels, which included a cover of Kylie Minogue's 1987 hit "I Should Be So Lucky." Back in the Korean market, they released Nu.Clear that May and their second Japanese EP Chamisma in July. They hit a career high in 2019 with their eighth Korean-language EP, No.1. Continuing their musical maturation, the "No"-featuring set peaked in the Top Five in both Korea and on the U.S. World chart, also landing on Billboard's Indie and Heatseekers lists. ~ Neil Z. Combining dance-pop, R&B, and even some dubstep and hip-hop, Seventeen is split into three subunits. The "hip-hop unit" comprises native South Korean members S.Coups (overall group and unit leader, born Choi Seungcheol), Wonwoo (born Jeon Wonwoo), Mingyu Kim, and American-born Korean Hansol Vernon Choi. The "performance unit" is headed by main choreographer Hoshi (born Kwon Soonyoung), with fellow Korean Dino (born Lee Chan) and mainland Chinese members Jun (born Wen Junhui in Shenzhen) and the8 (born Xu Minghao in Liaoning) rounding out the troupe. They released a pair of EPs in 2015, with 17 Carat peaking at number eight on the Billboard World Albums chart (later becoming the longest-charting K-pop album of the year) and Boys Be topping the same chart a few months afterward. Their debut LP, Love & Letter, arrived in 2016. It climbed to number five on the Heatseekers chart and number three on the World Albums chart before it was re-released as a deluxe version mere months later. Before the end of the year, the Going Seventeen EP arrived, featuring the hit single "BOOMBOOM." A fourth EP, A/1, was issued months later. The chart-topping, six-track set was accompanied by the group's first tour, which included stops in both Asia and North America. They closed out 2017 with the release of sophomore full-length Teen, Age, which was re-released in early 2018 as Director's Cut. Their Japanese debut, We Make You, landed in May. Later that summer, Seventeen scored their seventh number one release with the EP, You Make My Day, which was quickly certified platinum. The following year saw the group return with their third full-length effort, An Ode. ~ Neil Z. Yeung

BigBang
Artist
Bigbang is a chart-topping Norwegian pop/rock band that made its album debut in 1995, broke through to mainstream success in 2000 with the Top Five hit single "Girl from Oslo," and remained steadily popular in the years that followed. Formed in 1992 by Øystein Greni (vocals, guitar), Erik Tresselt (bass), and Christer Engen (drums), the band underwent numerous lineup changes over the years. Amid the changes, Bigbang remained a trio led by Greni, the band's songwriter, with Olaf Olsen (drums) and Nikolai Haengsle Eilertsen (bass, keyboards) lending their support for many years. Bigbang made their album debut in 1995 with Waxed. Little success came of the album, however, and several years passed before the follow-up effort Electric Psalmbook (1999) was released on Warner Music. Bigbang broke through to mainstream success in 2000 with the Top Five hit single "Girl from Oslo," whose popularity helped drive the accompanying full-length effort, Clouds Rolling By (2000), all the way to number two on the Norwegian albums chart. The EP-only singles "New Glow" and "Smiling For" were also popular, reaching numbers 12 and seven respectively on the singles chart. The follow-up album, Frontside Rock 'n' Roll (2002), was likewise successful, reaching the Top Five, while the live album Radio Radio TV Sleep (2003) was the band's first chart-topping release. Subsequent albums Poetic Terrorism (2005) and Too Much Yang (2007) were also chart-toppers, including the hit singles "Not a Rolling Stone" and "I Don't Wanna." All of this success culminated in a couple best-of compilations, Something Special: The Best of Bigbang (2007) and From Acid to Zen (2008), the latter intended for the American marketplace to capitalize on the band's recent move to Los Angeles. Working at L.A.'s Sound City Studios with co-producer Greg Richling (the Wallflowers) Bigbang recorded Edendale, their second American effort and seventh overall. Released in Norway in 2009 (followed by a 2010 U.S. release), it became their third consecutive number one and yielded the hit single "Swedish Television." Over the next few years Bigbang remained in Los Angeles, recording albums like 2011's Epic Scrap Metal and 2013's The Oslo Bowl, both of which failed to make inroads on the American charts but were massive successes in Norway, continuing their number one streak. In 2017, Greni, who remained the only consistent member of the band, made his solo debut with the Pop Noir LP. ~ Jason Birchmeier
