Asi nejlépe se mu to podařilo v dnes už klasické veselohře Volný den Ferrise Buellera (1986), kterou napsal údajně během šesti dnů a která líčí osudy geniálního záškoláka při jedné z jeho eskapád i marný boj ředitele školy Rooneyho přistihnout konečně nezbedníka při podvádění. Dokonale vypointovaný scénář a především přirozené herecké výkony nejen hlavních ale i vedlejších představitelů jsou největšími devizami filmu.
