Sbarcata a New York dalla nativa Philadelphia con la ferma volontà di sfondare nel mondo della moda, la bellissima Gia Carangi colpisce l'attenzione di Wilhelmina Cooper, un'agente ben introdotta negli ambienti che contano. La spregiudicatezza di Gia e la sua disponibilità a posare nuda ne fanno ben presto una star, ma i problemi arrivano piuttosto dalla sfera sentimentale: la ragazza avvia infatti una relazione con la truccatrice Linda, il cui contrastato rapporto con la propria bisessualità provoca in Gia una dipendenza dalle droghe pesanti che la porterà alla morte per Aids, avvenuta nel 1986 a causa del contagio con una siringa infetta.

Sua moglie e il suo migliore amico sono attori. Sopra tutti c'è Christof, dio-demiurgo-produttore, che gestisce la vita del poveretto. Naturalmente tutta l'America impazzisce per il programma verità, in virtù della regola del voyeurismo, molla televisiva irresistibile. Poi Truman ha qualche sospetto, diventa sicuro del trucco e cerca di scappare più volte.
