Mac Miller
Mac Miller
For a tragically brief time, Pittsburgh-based rapper and producer Mac Miller connected with legions of listeners through the appeal of both his curious, jazz-flecked instrumental style and heartfelt lyrics that laid bare his struggles with depression and addiction. Though his 2011 studio album debut Blue Slide Park topped the charts, his style and lyrical focus changed on subsequent, more personal releases like 2016's The Divine Feminine, which dominated the R&B and rap charts. Miller followed up with Swimming in 2018, but he died from an overdose one month after the album's release. His early output had an immediate resurgence as longtime fans mourned and those who just learned about the rapper explored his work for the first time. Posthumous releases followed Miller's death, such as 2020's Circles, and the 2025 release of "lost album" Balloonerism. Born Malcolm McCormick, Miller first used the alias Easy Mac, a name referenced on his debut mixtape, 2007's But My Mackin' Ain't Easy. His KIDS mixtape became his breakthrough when it was released in August of 2010, earning plenty of attention from hip-hop blogs and landing Miller a recording contract with Rostrum Records. Rostrum released his debut EP, On and on and Beyond, and his debut album, Blue Slide Park, in 2011. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. His seventh mixtape, Macadelic, arrived the next year, featuring appearances by Kendrick Lamar, Juicy J, Cam'ron, Lil Wayne, and more (the set was later remastered for a spring 2018 release). The more experimental effort, Watching Movies with the Sound Off, followed in 2013, with left-field hip-hop names like Action Bronson, Earl Sweatshirt, and Flying Lotus lending a hand. A year later, Miller issued the mixtape Faces, signed with Warner Bros., and launched his own imprint, REMember Music, under the major label. GO:OD AM followed in 2015 with Lil B, Chief Keef, and Miguel on the album's guest list. The single "100 Grandkids" peaked appropriately at number 100, while "Weekend" was certified gold. Just a year after GO:OD AM ascended to the Top Five of the Billboard 200 and rap charts, Miller returned with his fourth LP, The Divine Feminine. The album featured contributions from guests like Kendrick Lamar, Cee Lo Green, Ariana Grande, Robert Glasper, and Anderson.Paak, who lent his soulful rasp to first single "Dang!" A pair of non-album singles ("Buttons" and "Programs") kept Miller busy into 2018, when he issued his fifth album, Swimming. Debuting at number three on both the Billboard 200 and R&B/hip-hop charts, the set included the songs "Small Worlds," "Self-Care," and "What's the Use?" A month after the release of the effort, Miller died from a suspected drug overdose in his San Fernando Valley home. He was 26 years old. Following his death, seven of his full-lengths posthumously hit the Billboard 200 (the mixtapes Best Day Ever and Macadelic made their chart debuts), and Swimming was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Rap Album. In early 2020, his first posthumous set was released. Intended as a companion to Swimming, Circles featured vocals recorded for this eventual project, which was completed by producer Jon Brion. The LP became Miller's fifth Top Three showing on the U.S. charts. Later that year, KIDS was released to streaming services for the first time, which helped place it back on the Billboard 200. A revised edition of another mixtape, Faces, was issued commercially in 2021. The following year, his 2011 mixtape I Love Life, Thank You arrived on streaming services, which sent the collection to number 22 on the Billboard 200 (and into the Top Five on the U.S. indie album list). In 2025, the long-shelved album Balloonerism finally saw proper release. Recorded between 2013 and 2014 around the same time Miller was working on Faces, Balloonerism took a darker and more psychedelic tone than much of his other work. The album was released in tandem with a short film of the same name in January of 2025. ~ David Jeffries & Neil Z. Yeung, Rovi

SDM
SDM

Ninho
Ninho
A French rapper with a resonant delivery, Ninho developed his candid approach to lyrics in the southeast suburbs of Paris, where Atlanta trap was a major influence. He hit the Top 20 in France with the 2016 mixtape M.I.L.S (Maintenant Ils le Savent) before topping the album chart for the first time with 2017's Comme Prévu, his official debut. Along the way, he was featured on hit singles by the likes of Niska, 4keus Gang, and SCH. He returned to the top of the album chart with his second album, 2019's Destin. He hit the number one on the singles chart three times over the following year, with "Lettre à une Femme," "6.3," and a featured appearance on "Grand Bain" by Dadju. Raised in the the Yerres commune of Paris, William Nzobazola became fascinated with rap as a kid and would watch the older kids perform, then practice with friends. Using the alias Ninho, he broke out of the neighborhood with a series of mixtapes in the mid-2010s. One of them, 2016's M.I.L.S, reached number 11 on the French album chart. Riding the success of that release, his proper debut album, Comme Prévu, followed a year later on Rec. 118/Mal Luné Music/Warner Music France, and went all the way to number one. The year 2018 reflected Ninho's status as an emergent superstar, with appearances on over a half dozen charting singles, including the number 12 hit "Midi dans le Ghetto" by 4keus Gang. In 2018, he also presented M.I.L.S 2.0, which went to number two on the country's album chart. Ninho had an even bigger commercial success with 2019's Destin, his second album. It spent five weeks at the top of the French album chart, in addition to hitting number two in Switzerland and cracking the Top Ten in Belgium. That year, he also landed in the Top Three of France's singles chart as featured rapper on "Mayday" by SCH. Another mixtape, 2020's M.I.L.S 3, included the chart-topping track "Lettre à une Femme." Ninho also went to number one the year with a featured spot on Dadju's "Grand Bain" and with "6.3," a collaboration with NAPS. The hits kept coming in 2021, with the rapper reaching France's Top Three with "Mon Poto" (with Kore) and "Millions" (with Orelsan). ~ Marcy Donelson, Rovi

Dave
Dave
U.K. rapper Dave is a spellbinding storyteller, using his lyrics to reflect on both social issues and deeply personal subject matter alike. Acknowledgment early in his career from Drake gave Dave immediate exposure for his 2016 debut EP, Six Paths, and both his profile and artistry grew with subsequent releases, like his 2019 debut studio album Psychodrama and its 2021 follow-up, We're All Alone in This Together, both of which topped the charts in the U.K. He reached number one with subsequent singles "Starlight" (2022) and "Sprinter" (from 2023's Split Decision, with Central Cee). Following these successes, he guested on songs by Burna Boy and Lyrical Lemonade. Dave (aka Santan Dave) was born David Omoregie in the Brixton area of South London in 1998, later moving to Streatham. Growing up, he was inspired to pursue art in some form. Taking cues from his older brothers, he initially tried his hand at animation before moving on to piano; he finally settled on becoming a fully fledged MC. Unfortunately, his brothers ended up serving lengthy prison sentences. To cope with the drastic alteration in their lives, Dave burrowed even deeper into his music and developed a socially aware form of wordplay that set him apart from his peers. Despite starting to write bars around the age of ten, it wasn't until six years later that Dave would make his first appearance, freestyling on an underground U.K. rap channel Bl@ckbox, in 2015. In January of the following year, Dave returned with his first music video/single "JKYL+HYD," cementing his reputation for deep subject matter and ambitious lyrics. In the following months, Dave delivered two key freestyles on BBC Radio 1. The first was on Semtex's 1Xtra show and the second was on Charlie Sloth's Fire in the Booth. A number of singles followed, including a standout collaboration with West London's own rising star AJ Tracey on "Thiago Silva." By September, Dave was ready to deliver his first EP, Six Paths. The release was a success in its own right but got even more attention when Canadian rapper Drake remixed the single "Wanna Know," bringing Dave's sound to an American audience. His second EP, Game Over, was released in 2017, and Dave toured in support of his growing body of work. By this time, the rapper had developed a significant buzz among both critics and fans, and in 2018, he had his first chart-topping hit with his Fredo-assisted single "Funky Friday." In 2019, Dave released his debut studio album, Psychodrama. It debuted at number one in the U.K. and featured guest contributions from Burna Boy, J Hus, and Ruelle; it won awards for its excellence and was a commercial success. In 2021, Dave returned his with second studio album, We're All Alone in This Together. Made up of both sharp social commentary and unvarnished reflections on his own experiences, the album once debuted in the number one position on the U.K. albums chart. It featured guest contributions from Stormzy, James Blake, Wizkid, and others. "Starlight," a 2022 non-album single, became Dave's second U.K. pop number one. It was followed by "My 24th Birthday." The 2023 single "Sprinter," with Central Cee, was another chart-topper and it appeared on the duo's EP Split Decision. Dave was then featured on "Intoxycated" by Oxlade and "Cheat on Me" by Burna Boy. He released two songs, "Meridian" and "Special," with Tiakola. He also appeared on Lyrical Lemonade's "Stop Giving Me Advice," also featuring Jack Harlow. ~ Liam Martin, Rovi
