Publicada por primera vez en 1948, "Indigno de ser humano" es una de las novelas más célebres de la literatura japonesa contemporánea. Su polémico y brillante autor, Osamu Dazai, incorporó numerosos episodios de su turbulenta vida a los tres cuadernos que conforman esta novela y que narran, en primera persona y de forma descarnada, el progresivo declive como ser humano de Yozo, joven estudiante de provincias que lleva una vida disoluta en Tokio. Repudiado por su familia tras un intento de suicidio e incapaz de vivir en armonía con sus hipócritas semejantes, Yozo malvive como dibujante de historietas y subsiste gracias a la ayuda de mujeres que se enamoran de él pese a su alcoholismo y adicción a la morfina. Sin embargo, tras el despiadado retrato que Yozo hace de su vida, Dazai cambia repentinamente de punto de vista y nos muestra, mediante la voz de una de las mujeres con las que Yozo convivió, una semblanza muy distinta del trágico protagonista de esta perturbadora historia. "Indigno de ser humano" se ha convertido, con el paso de los años, en una de las obras más populares de la literatura japonesa, superando los diez millones de ejemplares vendidos desde su primera publicación.
