The Metamorphosis
Franz Kafka · 2018
The Metamorphosis is a novella by Franz Kafka, first published in 1915. It has been cited as one of the seminal works of fiction of the 20th century and is studied in colleges and universities across the Western world. The story begins with a traveling salesman, Gregor Samsa, waking to find himself transformed (metamorphosed) into a large, monstrous insect-like creature. The cause of Samsa's transformation is never revealed, and Kafka himself never gave an explanation. The rest of Kafka's novella deals with Gregor's attempts to adjust to his new condition as he deals with being burdensome to his parents and sister, who are repulsed by the horrible, verminous creature Gregor has become.
1984
George Orwell • 1961
Written more than 70 years ago, 1984 was George Orwell’s chilling prophecy about the future. And while 1984 has come and gone, his dystopian vision of a government that will do anything to control the narrative is timelier than ever...

• Nominated as one of America’s best-loved novels by PBS’s The Great American Read •

“The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”

Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can’t escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching...

A startling and haunting novel, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions—a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time.

Maktub
Paulo Coelho · 2021

His quest will lead him to riches far different—and far more satisfying—than he ever imagined. Santiago's journey teaches us about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, of recognizing opportunity and learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, most importantly, to follow our dreams.

El Arbol De La Ciencia
Pio Baroja · 1970
The present edition of El arbol de la ciencia has not been abridged since it is designed primarily for use in college language study. The editor feels that both second and third year classes can use this text although less advanced students will need special counseling with the philosophical Cuarte parte of he novel. If this Cuarte parte is omitted from the second year reading assignments, the instructor ought to prepare a lecture on Kant and Schopenhauer and their relation to Baroja's thought.
The questions at the end of the book have been divided into two sections., the cuestionarios and the temas de discusion literaria. The cuestionarios contain many factual and descriptive questions for the students of second year classes. The temas are directed to the third year students who, it is hoped, will arrive by means of them at a greater comprehension of Baroja's art. The instructor can mix the cuestionarios and temas at his discretion.
