Pubblicato nel 1890 sul “Lippincott’s Monthly Magazine” Il ritratto di Dorian Gray provoca subito grande curiosità nel pubblico, che nel protagonista riconosce facilmente lo stesso Wilde. Si disse che la storia era noiosa e immorale, i personaggi semplici marionette. Wilde, smesse le vesti del provocatore brillante, difese con grande dignità l’autonomia dello scrittore dalla morale, insistendo nel sottolineare le implicazioni etiche del racconto. La nuova traduzione di Benedetta Bini mette in rilievo il linguaggio fastoso ed elegante dell’autore; la prefazione di Aldo Busi, aggressiva e irriverente, salva e valorizza questo grande testo difendendolo da successivi “incauti prefatori”.
